More about Portless
Portless is an open-source utility that replaces confusing localhost port numbers with stable, human-readable HTTPS URLs for every local project. Instead of remembering http://localhost:3000, you can run portless run and instantly access https://myapp.localhost, complete with automatic HTTP/2 and trusted TLS certificates.
Designed for modern web development, Portless transparently proxies your frameworks and CLIs, auto-assigning ports and injecting the correct --port and --host flags for tools like Next.js, Vite, Astro, Nuxt, Angular, Expo, and React Native. It also supports subdomain-based routing, so you can cleanly separate services such as https://api.myapp.localhost and https://docs.myapp.localhost without manual port management.
Portless shines in multi-branch workflows: it automatically detects Git worktrees and prepends the branch name as a subdomain, giving each worktree its own URL (for example, https://fix-ui.myapp.localhost) with zero extra configuration. You can further customize your local domains using a custom TLD like .test, with automatic /etc/hosts synchronization.
Key advantages include:
- Memorable local HTTPS URLs instead of numeric ports
- Automatic TLS with local CA and HTTP/2 by default
- Framework-aware port injection for popular dev servers
- Git worktree isolation via branch-prefixed subdomains
- Flexible subdomain routing and wildcard support for multi-tenant setups
